With this as our shared starting point, we sat down with Milling to design a library on day two of the workshop. How, for example, can we best facilitate storytelling sessions for children in the library space? A multiplicity of solutions provides more options to choose from. From our discussions and collaboration the library spaces emerged as the result of a shared effort.

The result of the workshop is that the lobby of Bardu municipal council building will resemble a lounge where users can enjoy a cup of coffee, have access to a wide range of information, and where there is space to sit and read newspapers and magazines and to be inspired by new books on display. By the entrance there will be workspaces for the librarians and the community services staff. By the lounge there will be a bar with PCs. There will also be study spaces and a long table, where meetings can be held, teaching activities, working in groups, or where people can come together to take part in creative activities.

Further into the space there is a low stage, which can also be used as a seating area and exhibition podium. A couple of benches placed next to the stage can be quickly supplemented with single chairs, enabling transformation from one activity to another. To the right of the stage is a large “play bathtub” with a mattress and space for very young children to play in. Along all the walls is shelving for books and there is also space to sit with a little more privacy. Bardu Library is currently closed for refurbishing. Tenders have been received for furniture, specialized equipment and for building work, and the library is scheduled to reopen in August 2014.
